A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at
a reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now
retired.
During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress
in their work and lives. Offering his guests hot chocolate, the
professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot
chocolate and an assortment of cups - porcelain, glass, crystal, some
plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help
themselves to the hot chocolate.

When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said:
"Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken, leaving
behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want
only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and
stress. The cup that you're drinking from adds nothing to the quality of
the hot chocolate.
In
most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what
we drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup;
but you consciously went for the best cups... and then you began eyeing
each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and
position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and
contain life.
The
cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have.
Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot
chocolate God has provided us. God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses
the cups.
The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make
the best of everything that they have.
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
And enjoy your hot chocolate!!

So who would you rather be....

the happy-chappie without the moola,
or the stressed-up dude with all the riches?

If I can take the stress issue further:

Remember stress comes in two ways... there's stress that comes from happy (positive) situations and the one we all love-to-hate, which comes from negative situations.

So like it or not, you are bound to fall into both at some stage in your life. Kinda like you doomed if you do and damned if you don't!

The question is which stress would you rather be exposed to?

In answering Muzi

I would prefer good stress (the one that comes from positive situations) but taking in to note that Negative situations help individuals to grow.

I personally think that most of us complicate our own lifes with material things and the truth is we live in societies where there is so much pressure to improve ones life. I think the guy who was the first one to take the expensive cup was the one who influenced the decision of the rest of the guys

I believe Sipho to have hit the Mark in his second Paragraph.

I dont think the Prof was sayin dont get rich or have money...but alas...dont pluck your finances and stress yourself out too merely because you want to be seen that you are well off but in reality you are not happy. Simple example...Taking out a cumbersome loan from a bank (i.e Standard Bank) that you will repay for over a decade just because you wanna be seen driving the flashiest car.

I sent this via email to Ndumiso and others and this is what turned out, and my response hereunder, i believe, is tantamount to the point the Prof was making:

Nice one sani[/b]

And i said...

Kahle Kahle iv always concentrated on my life and the things not material to it are done in passing...never been the subject of enjoyment in it but the objects that came with it...think about it.

let me remind you...

A whole lot more than a little bit and a little bit more than a lot...like i like it.
